Guess Watches: UK Buying Guide to the Phoenix, Queen and Sugar Lines
Guess occupies a specific place in the watch market: Los Angeles styling at a high-street price. Founded in 1981 by the Marciano brothers, the brand built its reputation on denim and advertising imagery before watches became a significant part of the business. At £119 across our range, the appeal is obvious — you get a confidently designed watch without paying for a Swiss movement you would never notice.
Men's: the Phoenix family
Most of our men's Guess stock is Phoenix (references GW0094G1, GW0094G2, GW0456G2, GW0456G3). The design language is consistent: a round case in the 44mm region, a prominent bezel, and a dial with layered detailing that catches light. The silver-and-black GW0094G1 is the most versatile; the gold-tone GW0094G2 is the one people notice.
There is also a smaller group of references — GW0260G1, GW0260G2, GW0260G4, GW0265G7, GW0265G10 — which sit closer to a classic three-hand design. If the Phoenix looks too brash for your taste, start here.
Women's: Sugar, Queen and Iridescent Frontier
The women's range splits into three moods.
Sugar (GW0001L1)
The softest option: a smaller case, a clean dial and a bracelet that reads as jewellery first. This is the Guess watch to buy if you want something that works with a dress.
Queen (GW0464L1, GW0464L2)
Round case, stronger bezel, more presence. The Queen is the closest women's equivalent to the men's Phoenix — same confidence, smaller scale.
Iridescent Frontier (GW0044L1)
A multicolour, light-catching finish. This is a deliberate statement piece; it either suits your wardrobe completely or not at all. Worth seeing in daylight before deciding.
What "gold tone" means at this price
Gold-tone Guess watches use a gold-coloured plating over stainless steel or a base metal, not solid gold. Plating thickness determines how long the colour lasts: treated reasonably — no perfume directly on the case, no swimming, wipe after wear — a gold-tone finish holds up for years. On a £119 watch, that is the correct expectation to set.
If you want a finish that will not change colour, choose steel or two-tone instead. See our gold-tone watches for ladies collection for the plating-based options, and our metal guide for the full comparison.
Choosing between Guess and the alternatives
At £119 the direct competition is Tommy Hilfiger at £129 and Marc Jacobs at £129. Guess is the most fashion-forward of the three; Tommy Hilfiger is the most conservative; Marc Jacobs is the most jewellery-like, particularly in the women's range.
