It is the first new collection of watches for men and women in more than a decade from La Montre Hermès, the luxury house’s watchmaking division, and the first to appear from its creative director, Philippe Delhotal, who joined the company from Patek Philippe in 2009, and it is considered the culmination of a long-term strategy to set up Hermès as a credible maker of mechanical Swiss watches.
Without doubt this Piaget limited edition watch for SIHH 2016 wasn’t expected, however it is surely interesting. People will certainly be talking about Piaget’s $70,000+ mechanical/quartz hybrid that, in design, borrows from the previously released Piaget Emperador Coussin Tourbillon. Visually, just by looking at the watch, you’d have no real way of knowing that it includes a piece of more-modern technology in addition to its “mechanical backbone.”
It has kept getting bigger, and better. SalonQP was back in town at the middle of this month, taking over the Saatchi Gallery for the seventh time.
Collectors, connoisseurs and enthusiasts flew in from entire world to get the chance to see the ten best watches of the year, as voted by the jury of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2015, or be the first to witness some last-minute new releases before the Christmas season. Once again, SalonQP had a British focus, with brands such as Schofield, Roger Smith and Bremont drawing local collectors.

Shown here, the larger model in white gold with a bezel set with 78 brilliant-cut diamonds (approx. 0.7 carats) and an opaline white dial with slate-gray hour markers. It can be said with certainly that we have long called for an increase in complicated watch options for women. In recent years, it seems the call is being answered, although at a glacial pace. The announcement of the Piaget Limelight Stella watch is another step in the right direction. When there is no shortage of unisex mechanicals, it’s great to see calibres designed exclusively for women. In the past, it was assumed that sophisticated watches for women didn’t exist since a delicately proportioned watch simply didn’t have fully space in which to cram the same amount of complexity, and women weren’t as interested in watches. But that was the past. Why shouldn’t there be as much choice for female fans of haute horology as there is for men?
Now this watch is completely different, in our context, yet it displays total legitimacy in watchmaking. In choosing a man’s watch from a house that has excellent offerings for women, we wanted to emphasise Piaget’s pure watchmaking credentials. Besides, this watch is equally at home on the wrist of the most dapper of gentlemen and the most elegant of ladies. The new moonphase watch from watch manufacture and high jewelry house Piaget is a tribute to the feminine beauty of this technical feature. The moonphase keeps track of the phases of the moon and this one, with its domineering 12mm indication, will remain in synch with the moon for more than 120 years.
