Solar Flair: The Breguet Marine Équation Marchante

Typically watches with an equation of time complication require that the wearer engage his or her brain, ever so slightly. Because such watches usually show the equation of time, which is the difference between real solar time and local time, watch dials typically indicate this with a sub-dial and a secondary small hand. It is then up to the user to mentally add or subtract the difference displayed from the current time in order to calculate true solar time. read more

Celebrating Leap Day 2016

The beauty of a mechanical watch often cited by those who love them is the human interaction they require—winding, setting, operating a chronograph—but there is one kind of mechanical watch that is celebrated for its mechanical independence: the perpetual calendar.

Far from lesser complications that merely rely on gear reductions and clutches to perform functions, the perpetual calendar watch is endowed with a true mechanical memory, a sort of artificial intelligence that, as long as it is kept running, will tell you the correct day and date for generations. read more

Writer’s Roundtable: Baselworld 2016

Mike Thompson

Even before Baselworld 2016 begins, during Wednesday’s Press Day, you’ll find me walking through the always-beautiful Hermès and Patek Philippe stands. Each year, both these companies create some the year’s finest artisanal dials and display them just inside their spacious Basel real estate. I’ll be on the lookout at both locations for the real-life pieces with dazzling enamel dials I’ve only thus far seen in images. At the latter booth, Patek Philippe, I’ll finally discover how the Geneva giant will celebrate this year’s important Nautilus and Annual Calendar milestones. Both collections are marking anniversaries in 2016. read more

Famous Watch Heists in History – To Catch a Thief

Heists and crime stories captivate audiences and readers whether at the movies or the pages of the Sunday paper. John Dillinger, Henry Hill (Goodfellas), and Jesse James are icons for robbing banks and essentially, taking other people’s money. Although on screen it looks pretty awesome, in reality, the past – usually – catches up with perpetrators pretty quickly. read more

Breguet and Invention – Birth of the Tourbillon

Several months earlier, on December 24, 1800, the watchmaker had submitted the complete technical file accompanied by a watercolor technical drawing, stemming from his in-depth research and meticulous experimentation. This was the second time that high quality Breguet had requested and earned a patent. Three years earlier, on March 9, 1798, he had taken out a patent for a “constant-force escapement” applicable to both watches and clocks. There would be no third time, since Breguet did not deem useful to register other patents after the Tourbillon. read more

The Perfect Breguet Héritage 5410

Although this model is less of a jaw-dropper than the Tradition 7087, the Héritage 5410 can stand alone. The curved rectangular 18-karat rose gold case mixed with the tradition Roman numerals creates a timepiece that transcends design. The small seconds and date window are symmetrical while the abstracted numerals draw the eye. read more
